NEW Open Burn Permit System
The Canon City Area Fire Protection District in cooperation with area agencies is implementing a new open burning permit system. This system replaces the current permit system for our District. Citizens who wish to perform open burning must register for a new open burn permit.
How it works:
1. Register and obtain a NEW open burn permit through the automated online system. Fremont & Custer County Burn Permits
How to register for a Burn Permit.mp4
2. Your application for permit will be reviewed and approved by the Fire District. You will need to save, either electronically or printed, a copy of the burn permit. It contains specific provisions and rules for open burning. It is your responsibility to know and follow the provisions in the permit. Failure to follow the provisions of the permit can result in suspension or revocation of your permit, and possible fines and legal reprocussions.
3. On the day you wish to burn you will simply call the toll free Burn Permit system number (1-855-594-0555) and the automated system will answer your call. The automated system will ask you a series of questions to verify your identity and location of your intended open burn. It will then record your location of your open burn in the system. It will either grant you permission for burning or inform you that burning is not allowed. Permission is based on weather condtions in the area and fire restriction status. All provisions of your burn permit are to be followed for every approved open burn. At the completion of your open burn, simply make sure your fire is extinguished and cold, there is no need to call back to tell us you are done.
