The Canon City Area Fire Protection District has issued an order downgrading to Stage ONE Fire Restriction beginning on Tuesday, August  18, 2026 at 10:00 am.  As Fremont County and surrounding areas of Southern Colorado experience continue to experience multiple wildland fire events, critical fire conditions leading to extreme fire behavior potential has improved due to weather patterns increasing the moisture content of fuels. It is still imperative to remain in this low level of restrictions, to  provide for the safety of our community.

Prohibited actions under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:

• All agricultural burning including but not limited to weeds, brush, or grass.
• Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, coal or wood burning stove, any type of charcoal or wood fueled cooking, or open fire of any type in undeveloped areas. 
  • Developed areas where small recreational fires and cooking fires are allowed include: permanent fire rings in established campgrounds; areas at private residences clear of combustible materials; use of chimineas, approved fire pits, and patio patio fireplaces that are constantly attended by a responsible adult with an extinguishing source immediately available. 
• All burning of trash, refuse or other debris.
• Smoking; except within an enclosed vehicle, building, or outdoor smoking area that is hard-surfaced, barren, or otherwise cleared of all flammable vegetation and material. Discarding of cigarette butts in a receptacle not designed for disposal of cigarette butts, or at any location, or from any vehicle is expressly prohibited.
• Using any explosives materials, to include: fireworks, solid fuel rockets, blasting caps or any incendiary device.
• Outdoor welding, grinding or use of any type of torch in any area which presents the possibility of igniting vegetation or other combustible material, and there must be an adequate water supply and/or fire extinguisher on site.
• Operating any outdoor equipment or machinery in an undeveloped area with an internal combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order.
• Sale, use and possession of fireworks, including permissible fireworks as defined in §12-28-101, C.R.S.
• Off road use or parking of a motorized vehicle in an area that presents the possibility of sparks or exhaust heat igniting surrounding flammable vegetation

Outdoor Grilling information under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions:

• Grills using propane and other bottled fuels are allowed only in areas free of flammable vegetation and other flammable materials for three (3) feet in any direction, and must be used in a manner which present no fire danger to the surrounding area.
• No grill shall be left unattended, and shall have an adequate water supply and/or fire extinguisher on site.
